Tomatoes and Grafts

"Over 20 years ago, I began exploring the use of plants as art materials, creating sculptures that were not static but were literally alive. I collaborated with professional grafters and farmers to bring my vision to life, using vegetable sculptures grown into the shape of cartoon characters and plant grafting projects to combine skill and creativity and manipulate the natural world into something entirely new.

To me, these works were more than just vegetables or trees; they were living artworks, full of personality, potential, and beauty. By using plants as my materials, I aimed to bring up the concept of time in the work, as they could be thought of as very, very slow performances.

Though it has been some time since I created these works, I continue to revisit these ideas in many forms, even when using more conventional materials. I believe this work may be more relevant now than in the 90s when it was first made. It serves as a reminder of time, both fulfilled and unfulfilled potential, and the state of the natural world.

As an artist, I love finding the edge of acceptability and pushing boundaries, challenging conventional thinking in the process."
